Set up in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to buy john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed third-level domains remained working.
